The DEER lab investigates how both positive and negative childhood experiences shape the way children think, feel, and respond to the world
around them.

Our Mission

The DEER lab studies how biological, psychological, and environmental factors interact to shape children’s mental health and social development. Using a variety of scientific methods (developmental and cognitive assessments, neuroscientific tools, and observations of environments), we study how early life experiences and brain plasticity impact the way children process information and regulate their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in response. To achieve these aims, our research studies often include youth who have experienced early adversity and neurodiverse children. We aim to identify targets for change at the level of the individual, family, and society to ensure children receive the supports they need to grow and thrive!
